Find the best deal on video games

May 31st, 2009

How can you be sure you’re getting the best price on video games? It used to be that renting video games was a perfect solution and as inexpensive and easy as a visit to your corner movie store. However passionate gamers who rent several games at one time discovered how fast the rental charges can add up. Include the heart ache of failing to return a bunch of games on time and you’ll see that the late fees can really hurt.

Check out these timely hints on getting the best deal on video games & video game rentals.

First, ask your public library. Many offer free game rentals to the community. You already pre-paid for their offerings with your property taxes so you may as well get your money’s worth.

Game Review Websites - Many websites offering video game reviews include game details, ESRB ratings, available platforms, even actual gameplay footage. Check out the video graphics online first. You might find the game is too violent for your tastes or unacceptable for your small children, even though the ESRB ratings indicate it should be age-appropriate.

Don’t Pay Full Price - With online discount companies like eBay and Amazon, there is simply no reason to pay full price ever again. Many times you’ll find games for Playstation on sale by checking out these companies first.

Rent Games Online - Quite a few companies offer online video game rentals for a low monthly price. Members choose from over 6000 of the most popular games, delivered right to their door, can keep them as long as they like, never pay late fees for keeping them too long, and return them to the company with postage-paid envelopes. If you find a game you love, simply tell the company and you can keep it for a small fee. A few sites like GameFly offer a free trial period. Try them out to verify how their program works before you commit.

Avid gamers who are serious about their passion can save a ton of money if they know where to look.

Pros and Cons of Cuisinart Rice Cookers

May 31st, 2009

The CRC-400 (4 cups) and the CRC-800 (8 cups) are the Cuisinart rice cookers available in the market. They look identical, only differing in, well, size. I like the stainless steel finish on the exterior of the CRC-400 and the CRC-800. They also have a nonstick bowl and a stainless steel steamer, ideal for steaming your favorite vegetables, poultry, or seafood.

Both models use an easy-to-use boiling method. You’ll also get a removable glass top lid, a measuring cup, and a plastic rice spoon. Each also includes a manual with easy to follow recipes. But there’s lacking about the CRC-400 and the CRC-800: Fuzzy Logic and sophisticated settings for different kinds of rice. Both also don’t have a programmable timer. Despite all these, they can manage to cook the best rice. However, many rice cooker experts say that Cuisinart rice cookers do not give that much value.

4-cup CRC-400

The Good: The 4-cup version has a very trendy design. It has the size of a small two-slice toaster, so you don’t have to worry about it taking a lot of space on your counter. It fits in quite nicely regardless of your kitchen decor. Another thing I like about it is the fact that it’s super easy to clean and many of its parts are dishwasher-friendly. It also allows you to cook your rice in no time.

However, many consumers don’t like the splattering. But you can avoid this by rinsing the water. And then add a teaspoon of vegetable oil for each cup of rice. It usually works.

This rice cooker has tiny steaming basket that can’t hold to many vegetables and seafood. It’s probably only ideal for only two persons at most. Another issue is the water-to-rice learning curve. However, this model works just fine once you get past this issue. This rice cooker is in fact at par with other rapid boil-style cookers.

8-cup CRC-800

The Good: This rice cooker has a modern and sleek feel to it. The outside of this rice cooker sports a brushed and sleek stainless steel. It’s a good looking cooker to have in you kitchen. Its chrome plated handles are also touch friendly. Your hands won’t get burned when you move the cooker.

This rice cooker features level control. It also has warming modes and comes with retractable cord storage. It also includes a really nice rice paddle and a plastic measuring cup. This rice cooker has limited 3-year warranty.

The Bad: While the cooking pot has a nonstick coating, many consumers nag about the sticking rice. According to the manual, you have to spray its bottom so that the rice won’t stick. Still, a nonstick bowl should be nonstick, whether you spray it or not. Still, many consumers say they have no problem with rice sticking.

Many consumers complain that the 8-cup CRC-800 has some minor splattering issues like the 4-cup CRC-400. Yes, it features a steam vent that prevents splattering. But only if you cook 6 cups ore less. Spilling becomes an issue with much rice, say 8 cups.

The Joy of Trading Card Games

May 30th, 2009

An alternative to the games for kids on the Internet is a new and exciting pastime, the collectible card game. Children have the opportunity to pit their skills against others in real life, and interact in ways that aren’t available in the online world.

One major attraction to the fun provided by a collectible card game is the artwork that’s available on these cards. Artists from all over the world contribute to the design and sometimes to the very concept of the character. The collectible card game fad is also popular due to the value of the trading cards, and the trading potential. If you keep the cards in great shape, their value can increase over the years. So besides a large number of hours of play, you have an asset that can connect you with other fans over time.

Strategic gameplay with kids games is also good for the imagination and strengthening creative skills. Kids have to use intellect and wit to beat out their opponents. A plus is that a card game takes no batteries, no computer, no special appliances. Just people! And the cards of course.

The tales behind the games also make for great entertainment. Perhaps the player will be protecting an entire world from destruction. Maybe they will be able to act out a hero role in the activity. From fantasy to the now popular sci-fi themes, you can find anything you like in the way of concepts for games. Most trading card games are also family-friendly. This means the entire family can get together for some quality time and share in the enjoyment. With some games providing positive messages, such as saving the environment, there’s a lot to be gained for everyone.

Office Refurbishment Ideas for Productive Employees

May 28th, 2009

Introduction

An enormous number of people work in offices of one kind or another. They may be offices in buildings purpose built or attached to a factory or in business premises. For many self employed business people the office is a room in their home converted for that purpose. Solicitors, doctors, estate agents and insurance agents, in fact any business that you can think of, works from some kind of office or another. You might even say 80% of the adult population work in an office. But I wonder how many of those people have any say in what kind of office they have and whether or not it suits their requirements. Mostly when someone new joins a company or firm, they are given a space for their office usually left by the previous incumbent. I suspect that if you asked occupants how they would like their office to be they would find it difficult to tell you.

When you think of the number of hours we spend in an office, at least eight hours per day and sometimes up to sixteen hours if it’s a busy period. Yes people are allowed out for breaks and rest times, but it is an awful lot of your life cooped up in small space. If at least a third of one’s working life is to be spent in an office, then it makes perfect sense to ensure the environment is as comfortable, pleasant and as healthy as possible.

So how much thought goes into the planning of workspaces?

Where a building is purpose built such as an office, then the architects I am sure will have created good designs to suit the purpose. However, it has been known for new buildings to be problematic for the people working it them. For instance, synthetic materials used for carpeting can sometimes give off toxic fumes which cause allergies or illness of the staff. Air conditioning that relies on recycled air has the potential to carry bugs that can lay the whole office off at the same time. So there are many factors to consider in creating an office environment to ensure the staff are productive, creative, energised and remain healthy.

Old buildings, originally built for other uses, when converted to office space will have different challenges to resolve. Often old buildings have very high ceilings where the heat rises up so that the inhabitants below are cold yet the heating bills are going through the roof, literally!! How to maximise the space available to provide a comfortable working environment will be a real challenge and this is where often the use of a mezzanine floor and suspended ceilings are valuable.

It is a well known fact for any establishment that happy workers give better performance and generate more revenue than unhappy workers. The workforce are more motivated, creative, helpful and have less time off work for illness if they are happy in their jobs. I am sure there are statistics available for these details, which will state how comfortable, happy, employees are an essential ingredient of any successful company, get recommended interior fit out specialists involved to create that great working environment.

Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the study of workplaces and the equipment used, to achieve the best design for comfort, safety, efficiency, and productivity. Research has been carried out over the last few years at Nottingham University on office space allocation issues.

Workspace planning is fast becoming a specialist industry because of all of the current regulations and legislation. Formerly known, in the UK as the Factories Act and now known as the Health and Safety Executive regulations are in place to ensure that employees have sufficient working space in which to perform their work. This can be a potential minefield including such things as physical space, usable space, corridor spaces, and minimum light and ventilation regulations. If you are about to commence on an office refurbishment project ensure that your interior fit out specialists of conversant with all of these regulations before you engage them to perform your work.

What are the Criteria for a good office environment? We are sentient beings, which mean we respond with feeling and perception as well as intellectually to our surrounding.

Seeing

The first thing to consider when commencing an office refurbishment project is how does it look? The initial impact on us comes from what we see. The decor and arrangement of furniture, the window aspect and lighting are important in our perception of whether or not it is pleasing to the eye. Does the office have all the necessary equipment, computer, phone and sufficient storage for files and books etc? Plants provide a sense of balance in the space as long as they are discreetly positioned and don’t make it look cluttered. Plants are oxygen generators and help to refresh the air.

Smell

On entering a new place the first thing we take in is the smell whether we pay attention to it or not. We notice immediately if the air is stuffy or if there is an unpleasant smell such as sweaty bodies. However a pleasant fragrance or no smell at all will be inviting. Baker shops nearly always pump out the fresh smell of baked bread into the street to entice people in to buy the goods. So although we may not be aware that smell plays an important part in our responses, we are still animals and we do use our olfactory senses a great deal more that we realise.

Feel touch

How does the furniture feel? Plastic seats can be very uncomfortable to sit on for a long time. Plastic does not breathe, it draws moisture from the skin so that when you stand up your posterior will be damp and uncomfortable. Padded fabric is warmer than leather for comfort and not as expensive. The desk chair needs to be the correct height for desk and give suitable support, a computer needs to be set correctly to avoid neck and wrist strain of the operator.

The temperature in the workspace is best if it’s not too warm and not too cold. By ensuring an ambient working temperature of around 21 degrees centigrade, in both hot and cold weather, you can be assured your staff will be as comfortable as possible, this is also an important factor in any office refurbishments.

Too warm and we become sluggish and sleepy, too cold and we become distracted and use up valuable energy keeping warm. Fresh air is also beneficial to stimulate the brain cells.

Sound Hear

What can we hear? Is it noisy or quiet? When I was first starting out in business, I went to visit a local manufacturing company to learn about the way they managed their business. At lunch time I was taken into the executive dining area where there was a waitress service and we had a very civilised lunch. Later I was taken to the works canteen. When we walked in I was hit with a blast of noise such as I had never experienced before. The hall was large with a very high ceiling and nothing to damp down the echo. The result was that everyone ended up shouting to be heard and there was loud music playing as well. I was shocked, not just at the noise level but by the contrast between the executive dining room and the workers canteen. I had come from an company which treated all members of the company the same so there were no executive areas and everyone, high and low mingled together for meals and break times. Guess which company had the better worker relationships and higher output?

Where a company utilises an open plan office then noise levels can be very distracting and one solution is to incorporate ‘White Noise’ which is a low level background noise to interfere with the general office talk going on over the phone or mini meetings. Sometimes quiet relaxing music is introduced as background noise but this is not normal in a business place.

Taste

Well we are not going to go around licking the furniture, but another important consideration is to ensure that a there is an area to enjoy a nice coffee or tea away from the desk throughout the day. So is there a pleasant area for making drinks and preparing snacks, or even lunch facilities alongside the office. I once worked in an office where they had a small kitchen area off the main office for making drinks and snacks and there was always a bowl of fresh fruit for employees, as the company recognising the refreshing effects of fresh fruit.

Workspace planning

So as you can see there are many things that can make the work environment a nice place to be. However getting the original layout and size of spaces for the employees is a complex process.

How much space does each individual need to work in? According to the Officewise publication from the Health and Safety Executive in the UK employers must provide a minimum of 11 cubic metres for each person permanently occupying a workplace. However there are all sorts of exceptions and caveats to this rule, such as making sure the space is usable space, and clearly if that space were under the stairs with no windows, or ventilation then it would not be suitable. So it is very important to ensure that your new office fit out adheres to all of the current legislation with regards to workspace laws.

When planning comfortable workspaces the industrial fit out specialists can make use of suspended ceilings which makes the installation of services easier and more cost effective. Electrical supply, air conditioning units, water pipes and telephone cables can all run behind the suspended ceiling making access easy if anything goes wrong and repairs need to be implemented.

Positioning of the electrical and telephone outlet is also critical. The computers used in offices today all require their own electrical supply even if they are networked with the system.

Outside light from windows is a requirement for offices. The days of the cupboard office cubbyhole are gone. Light airy spaces make people feel good and doses of sunshine each day lift our spirits. However too much sunshine will overheat an office so the use of vertical blinds is recommended to deflect the rays of the sun without reducing too much the level of illumination.

Costs

To conserve office space costs some industrial fit our specialists have come up with the idea that instead of having a board rooms for meetings they have their meeting standing up around a special tall coffee table. This reduces the amount of time spent in meetings and the space is reusable for the lunches. Other schemes encourage employees to work from home for part of a week and utilise a system of desk sharing or moveable desks.

Reconfigurable spaces

Another way of economising on the cost of office space is by careful rearrangement of the existing floor area. There may be dead areas which could be released and turned into useable space. The installation of new interior partition walls can rearrange the existing space to create a pleasanter working environment. Sometimes working in an open plan office is beneficial for communication between staff, other times it is a distraction and prevents efficiency. So having the option of both open space and separate offices provides the full range of options which can be easily introduced with new partition walls.

For example one of my clients, took over a set of offices and had various walls moved, so instead of it having two small offices, one without a window, they created one large office for the MD and a really good sized store room which they needed for long term storage of customer files. They then took out another divider and made a good size open plan office space and rearranged another wall to create a board come conference room. Also access to the little kitchen was changed to be more convenient. The choice of subtle colours on the walls and new vertical blinds caused the whole suite of rooms to be transformed into a pleasant and airy working area. Where there is plenty of ceiling height the introduction of a Mezzanine floor generates valuable areas perhaps for storage, private meeting rooms or extra offices.

Other thoughts in workspace planning, is the situation of facilities such as kitchen, toilets, relaxation areas and outside space if available. Sometimes the introduction of a simple partition can create a relaxation/dining area without losing too much of the work area.

All Health and Safety regulations are paramount they have to be adhered to in the workplace and must be incorporated into any plan along with full fire regulations.

Conclusion

Many companies may feel that upgrading the facilities is a ‘nice to have’ idea and the reality is that it usually comes at the bottom of the list on money allocation. However this is erroneous thinking; office refurbishment is never a waste of time or money. Creating a pleasant office environment by upgrading worn out or old fashioned surroundings and furnishings will make a big difference to the working life of the employees. Improved working conditions may be only part of the picture in achieving real job satisfaction, but it is a good start in the right direction. It also says a lot about what the senior people in the organisation think about their employees. If they ensure that their staff are given the necessary equipment and facilities to do their job effectively then the employees will give better service and can be more efficient and there will be a better working environment all around.

Caring For Your Senior Horse

May 27th, 2009

Owning a horse brings great joy and a developing relationship. As the years go by this relationship deepens and your horse really counts on you for his future. Horses’ lives age much faster. One year of a horse is equal to three years of a human life. We can liken a 20 year old horse with a 60 year old person.

It is for this reason that it is important to keep a watchful eye on your horse as he ages.
Humans notice a temperature change as we age and so do our horses. Be sensitive to the conditions that your horse is in at this stage of their lives. They aren’t able to do as well with extreme temperature changes. It’s always a good idea to keep a blanket handy in the colder days especially if you live in a higher elevation or where there are cold seasons. In the same way be sure to provide at least one or two shady spots where your horse can escape from the direct sun.

It is good for your horse to stay active unless there is a medical reason. Although he might not be working, exercise is essential to keep limber, make use of their lungs and other body parts as well as having the joy of seeing life outside the stable walls. Turning him out will also keep the weight gain low and his spirits high.

As your horse ages, his body will go through various changes. This includes his stomach and digestive system. It is essential to feed your horse in accord with these changes. There are some great supplements in the market that make up for deficiencies in nutrient absorption of senior horses. A favorite is TAHITIAN NONI® Equine EssentialsTM. One of the things that it does is promotes proper feed digestion and nutrient absorption. Another great feature is it supports the equine immune system with superior antioxidant activity.

Have you ever noticed that many senior horses stress easier? My favorite feature of TAHITIAN NONI® Equine EssentialsTM is that it contains adaptogens to help relieve stress. They are much calmer and relaxed. TAHITIAN NONI® Equine Essentials FlexTM was formulated with horses who suffer from joint problems. It supports joint function but also includes MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate as well as the Omega 3 and 6 oils found in the TAHITIAN NONI® Equine EssentialsTM. It has given many a horse a new lease on life.
Horses can have happy and healthy lives into their 30’s and 40’s if given the proper care, love and support.

Many aluminum gazebo plans are the best ones to get. The can be very important if the gazebo will be out in the elements. You don’t want your gazebo rotting or decaying. The rougher elements sometimes cause gazebos to break down after years of wear and tear.

You should be able to design your own gazebo at home on the Internet. Some sites will allow you to construct your own gazebo right there on the spot and show you how it turns out. Once the gazebo is constructed you may be able to view the gazebo plans as well. The japanese gazebo is a unique style of gazebo. These plans for the gazebo can be offered to the customer free of charge. May 27th, 2009

Wageday Loan are a fairly fresh form of borrowing and getting cash in Britain. They have been available for a good time in the US and they are often advertised in poorer areas in neighbourhoods. But the loans have at this point become a fact of UK life and the easiest place to search for payday loans is online. Normally they all happen in a similar way – get an amount of cash quickly in liquid and then repay before the completion of a period of your next payday for a fee. Normally this is roughly 25 per cent which is inflated interest, but in an emergency may be a useful possibility.

Right, now a completely different sort of financial product, and that is the area of financial trading, as in stocks or Foreign Exchange trading. Can You Grow Your Wealth with a Home Based Business?

May 26th, 2009

The answer to this question is a definite YES! I have lots of business associates in the USA, Europe, Australia and New Zealand who are working in home based businesses and making thousands of dollars each week. In fact the lady who introduced me to my home based business is only 25 years of age and she made over $500,000 in her first 12 months of her business.

I am now replicating her results, but please read on and you will learn about what I have achieved and experienced in three very different situations and how in the end I succeeded in taking control of my future.

My Traditional Business Experience

I used to own and manage a very profitable and high-profile restaurant and bar in Brisbane, Queensland for a period of over 12 years. I started it from scratch and like most traditional businesses it was really expensive to set up and the running costs were enormous.

Although I made a lot of money with this venture, I finally decided to offload it when I came to realise that the long hours and constant stress of managing over 30 staff, dealing with various government authorities, endless paper work and hundreds of customers per week was absolutely destroying my life.

You can become rich with a traditional business but you will need to be extremely committed as you won’t be able to walk out and close the door anytime you want.

There will be lots of work to do and deadlines to meet, customers to service and more than likely, staff to hire and manage unless you want to do all the work yourself. The hours are generally very long and in most cases the business can end up taking over your life. Another point to consider is that you’ll be on your own to work things out and solve any problems as they arise.

My Job Experience

After selling the business, I decided that a job would be a better alternative to owning a business so I set about finding one and little did I know what I was in for!

I spent 8 hours a day scouring the employment classifieds, networking, perfecting my resume and attending interviews for jobs I didn’t even want. I felt undervalued and demoralised and almost gave up hope before I finally won a job with a company as an Events Manager.

All good you might well think, but unfortunately this was not the case as now I was into something that would cost me 12 hours of my time, 5 days a week as I got dressed up for work, traveled to and from work and actually did the work. I was working under considerable pressure and was totally stressed out by having to answer to a boss and co-ordinate every single element of each event from travel and accommodation arrangements, key note speakers, entertainment and right down to sorting out what type of lettuce should go on the dinner plates of the attendees. What a nightmare! But the thing that annoyed me the most was that I was doing all of this to make my boss richer while I had to settle for a small pay packet at the end of each week. JOB = Just over broke.

My Home Business Experience

As you might have guessed, I didn’t stay in my job as an Event Manager for long. I had spent seven months of my life trying to find the right job and after only 1 month I resigned.

I had no idea what to try next but I was determined to find something that would tick ALL the boxes for me and knew that I first needed to get very clear about what I really wanted.

I did not want to:

Own and manage a stressful, traditional type of business

Outlay a lot of money to get started in a new business

Answer to a boss and have to beg for time off work

I did want to

Earn a lot of money

Work from home

Take control of my future

With the above in mind, I spent the next couple of months researching my options until I was eventually attracted to an advertisement (placed by a 25 year old lady) about a home based business opportunity. I must admit that I was pretty hesitant to begin with but I decided I had nothing to lose by finding out more so I answered the ad and within 1 week I was up and running with my very own home based business.

On my best day so far, I earned five thousand dollars but what I really love about my home business most is that I actually took back control of my own life. I now work the hours I choose, from the comfort of home or anywhere I like really with my laptop and phone. I don’t have to juggle and manage staff anymore and gone is all the stress. I fit my work around my life, generally about 25 hours per week and I absolutely love what I do.

It’s not for everyone however and if you are considering getting started in a home business you should ask yourself the following important questions:

1. Is the business aligned with your income and lifestyle goals?

2. Do you have some money and time to invest into the business?

3. Can you work diligently as your own boss and without supervision?

4. Will there be anyone to help or guide you if you get stuck along the way?

Yes! You can make money with home based businesses. Lots of money!
